1./ General introduction:
KIW is software for analysis and design of pre-engineered steel frame; the final result is a detailed drawing for steel frame with I-section. Especially, KIW has an optimal designing ability, assuring all members with enough bearing capacities and the least materials used.
2./ Functions of the software
* Data input

  • A graphics interface interactive with user.
  • A library of sample structures usually used such as one-span frame or multi-span frame, each span can have different slope of roof.
  • Steel member can have I-shape section, with built-in section or combined section from steel plate
  • Full of loading types applied on structure members (uniformly distributed load, trapezoidal load, triangular load, axial load) and joint load (concentrated load, forced displacement of restraints). Automatically accumulate some loads such as wind load (followed Vietnamese standard 2737-95), gravity load, wall load, roof load.
  • Full of design parameters according to Standard with beam and column elements in plane structure system; full of design parameters used for 30 types of connection details.
  • In examination, the software examines capacity and stability of elements on the base of defined-by-user section. In designing, the software automatically determines optimal section for main bearing elements, assuring for strength, stability and for a smallest amount of materials.

* Analysis and design

  • Use the FEM (finite element method) to determine internal force.
  • Automatically combine internal forces, determine the envelope for each members.
  • Design/ examine members according to Vietnamese or American standards (AISC-ASD or AISC-LRFD).
  • Create connection details according to Vietnamese standards.
  • The iteration method of calculation in designing (user needn't care about original section of members) enables determination of optimal section for structure elements, thus economize materials (in each time of iteration, the software determine internal force, designs elements according to Vietnamese or American standards AISC). The more the time of iteration is, the more economized materials are.
* Result display
  • Graphics environment represents results such as structure geometry, loading, displacement, internal force diagram (moment, shear force, axial force), envelope, sectional diagram of members.
  • See and print detailed results for each node and members in graphics interface.
  • Full of reports about internal force of members, displacement of nodes, results of designing/ examining steel elements, results of designing connection.
  • Able to change the results of sectional design according to each element, results of designing connection according to each one in graphics environment of the program.
  • After having results, user can "transfer" all technical design results (including drawing of frame, member sections, drawing of connection details, and list of used materials) into graphics environments CAD software.
